The Mediator, Sir Mister Hummingbird

At the time depicted in this painting, the young couple is still childless, but as the title of the work perhaps already suggests, the first wrinkle in their love has been encountered, and there is work to be done for the Mediator.
 

The smaller-scale sketch visible in the first image reveals that a Mediator will flutter between the distinguished couple: Sir Mister Hummingbird. Unfortunately, in the midst of deeply wounded feelings, and caught in the crossfire of glances fired with a force that shakes the very depths of the young love’s soul, Sir Mister Hummingbird has no idea which way to turn!
 

The painting is still unfinished — perhaps one day I will feel inspired to complete it as well…
